The owners requested a complete renovation of a 1980’s spec-Tudor house and garden. Their goal was to improve and update the house with a modern, youthful and urbane design, inside and out. An extensive steel, wood and glass trellis was designed for the south-facing rear of the house to provide much-needed shade and to create a modern transition to the garden: its long lines and refined details unify the existing ad-hoc construction with clarity and purpose.
A new pool and pool house were designed for a sunny knoll in the garden, sited to capture views of the surrounding hills. Sliding glass walls, a double-sided fireplace and indoor-outdoor shower dissolve the pavilion into the landscape. Passive-solar siting and massing strategies, a gray-water system, and a roof-top solar pv array are part of the sustainable strategy for construction.
