Orchard House is located in a rural area of western Sonoma County. The site has a heritage apple orchard with spectacular views of neighboring vineyards and Mt. St. Helena. A tired 1980's house was transformed and modernized with a new open plan, greater connections to the outdoors, and extra room for visitors, while still referencing the direct pragmatism of vernacular agrarian construction. Streamlined geometry and dedicated material applications highlight the essential form of a house on a plinth mediating its sloped site. Sustainable features include a solar PV array, solar hot water system, smart home controls, and thermally-broken windows and doors. New landscape design includes a pool, orchard restoration, drought-tolerant planting and raised vegetable beds.
